Hook up a DSL Modem

DSL requires you to hook up a modem to connect to the Internet. The process is simple, but can become complicated if you have never done it before or if the documentation accompanying your modem is vague or too technical to help you. These steps will guide you through the process.

Instructions

  1. Read all the instructions that came with your modem. Some modems may require that installation proceed in particular order.
  2. Run the installation CD that came with your modem, if there is one.
  3. Plug filters into phone jacks that are used for telephones or fax machines. This will keep those appliances from interfering with your Internet access.
  4. Attach the power source to the modem, then plug it into an outlet.
  5. Plug the phone line into the wall jack, then into the phone slot on the modem.
  6. Plug the ethernet cable/CAT 5 cable into the ethernet port on the back of the modem, then plug the other end into your computer.
Tips and Warning!
  • If you're using a hub or router, the ethernet cable should be plugged into the modem, then into the router.
  • Be sure to follow the installation procedure specified for the modem you're using.
