Connect to a Remote Computer Over the Internet
Connecting to a remote PC can increase your productivity from home or decrease your productivity from work. If you've left important files on a remote machine, want to get in a quick game of Spider Solitaire or provide remote desktop support, using a Virtual Networking Connection (VNC) is the quickest and most-efficient way to connect to a remote computer over the internet.
Early VNC programs required extensive setup, modern VNC server/client programs require little more than a few clicks to setup.
Instructions
- Point your web browser at the downloads page for the VNC client of your choice (check the "Resources" section for freeware options).
- Download the program file to your desktop, and double click it to begin the installation process (if necessary). Reboot your PC if prompted.
- Set your desired password. Make sure it is a combination of letters and numbers but easy for your to remember.
- Obtain your computer's WAN IP address. You can visit an IP verification website to find your IP if you're unsure. Make a note of your computer's IP for future use.
- Leave your VNC server program up and running in the background of your computer.
Client Configurations
- On the client machine, point your web browser at the downloads page for the VNC client of your choice (check the "Resources" section for some freeware options).
- Download the client version of your chosen VNC software. Save the program file to your desktop or a location you can easily remember.
- Double-click the program file to launch the program. Enter your server computer's WAN IP address and the password you previously set. Click "Ok" or "Connect."
- Control your remote computer as you would normally. When your finished with your session, close the VNC window.
- Check to see if your workplace allows VNC access before downloading or installing a VNC program.
