Download Speed with a 56K Modem

Having a 56k modem can be a frustrating experience due to the fact that there are faster modems available. However, there are some things a person can do to increase the download speed on their modem, allowing them to search the Web more quickly or download files and watch videos online in significantly less time.
  1. Go to the "Start" menu and open "Control Panel." After the "Control Panel" is opened, click on "Modem Properties." After this page is opened, slide the bars on "Advanced Port settings" all the way to the right.
  2. Locate the "Maximum Port Speed" location. This should be set to 115,200.
  3. Open Internet Explorer. Go to the "Tools" menu on the top of the page and click on it. Then click on "Internet Options." Under the "Temporary Internet Files" menu, go to "Settings" and select "Automatically."
  4. Under the "Extra Settings" button, type in the following: "s11=55." This will make the modem dial more quickly.
  5. Download TCP Optimizer. The link for the download can be found at the bottom of this page. After the download is complete, the following settings should be inserted into the program:

    MaxMTU: 1500
    TCP Receive Window: 8760
    MTU Discovery: Yes
    Black Hole Detect: No
    Selective ACKs: Yes
    Max Dup ACKs: 2
    Time to Live (TTL): 128
TCP 1323 Options: Make sure both boxes are unchecked.
  6. On the "Other Settings" tab, enter the following:
    Max Connections per Server: 4
Max Connections per 1.0 Server: 8
  7. Select "Apply Changes" and reboot the computer by going to the "Start" menu and selecting "Restart."
  8. Open Internet Explorer and navigate to "Temporary Internet Files" the same way you did in step 3. Under "Settings" select "Every Visit to Page."
  9. Open "Network Connections" in the "Control Panel." Right-click on the connection and select "Properties." If the "QoS Packet Scheduler" is installed, highlight it and then uninstall.

Connect to the Internet. Your download speed with a 56K modem should now be quicker.
