Install Dial Up Internet on a Laptop

With all the emphasis on wireless connectivity and high speed Internet access, it is easy to forget that laptops are still capable of using dial-up Internet connections. Even if you can't afford broadband access -- or if you live in an area where it's not available -- you can still get the Internet on your laptop. A few simple steps can have you connecting to the Internet the old-fashioned way in no time.

Instructions
  1. Click on the "Start" menu and go to "Control Panel." (Click "Control Panel" or go to "Settings" and then select "Control Panel," depending on your version of Windows).

  2. Double-click the "Network Connections" icon.

  3. Click "Create a New Connection" or "Create a New Network Connection."

  4. Make sure the box next to "Connect to the Internet" is checked and select "Next."

  5. Choose "Set Up My Connection Manually" and click "Next."

  6. Choose "Connect Using a Dial-Up Modem" and click "Next."

  7. Give your dial-up connection a name and click "Next."

  8. Enter the phone number your computer will be dialing to connect to the Internet and click "Next." If you do not know this number, call customer support at your Internet service provider and ask.

  9. Type in your account's user name and password and click "Next."

  10. Click "Finish."

  11. Connect your laptop to a phone jack using a standard phone cord. Follow your ISP's protocol for dialing in.
