Pocket PC Into a Wireless Modem

As technology continues to advance at a staggering rate, mobile devices also continue to improve with ever increasing functionality. While the Internet has long been a powerful resource for information and communication, the number of websites designed specifically for Pocket PC's remains small. For mobile professionals, accessing essential websites from Pocket PC devices while outside the office has presented a challenge and severely negative impact on efficiency due to a lack of user-friendly mobile interfaces. Pocket PC's and other Windows Mobile devices contain the ability to act as wireless modems and facilitate Internet connections where wi-fi signals do not exist.

This article will help you to turn Your Pocket PC Into a Wireless Modem
Instructions

  1. Connect your Pocket PC to your computer. Plug one end of the USB data cable into your Pocket PC and the other end into an empty USB port on your desktop or laptop computer. Your computer will detect the new hardware connection and install any necessary drivers for proper communication.

  2. Start Mobile Device Center. Click your computer's "Start" button, scroll to "All Programs," then click the small green icon labeled "Mobile Device Center." The software will load and detect the presence of your Pocket PC.
  3. Register your device as a modem. Once Mobile Device Center recognizes your Pocket PC, tap your device's "Start" button, scroll to "Settings," choose "Connections," then tap "Wireless Modem." In the new window that appears, tap the "Menu" soft key and choose "Start" from the list of options that appears. This process removes your Pocket PC connection to Mobile Device Center and instead registers your device as a new modem. Your desktop or laptop will re-detect your phone as new hardware and install necessary drivers. You can also initiate this same type of wireless Internet connection by pressing your phone's "Start" button and selecting the "Internet Sharing" icon, which opens a window similar to the Wireless Modem screen. From this new screen, simply press the "Connect" soft key to establish the wireless connection.
